The control unit has an electronic control unit, which depending on at least one operating variable, changes over between an operation of the fuel injection, changes over in to layer or homogeneous operation. In addition an adjusting element for adjusting the air supply to the IC engine is influenced. With the changeover between these operating modes selects the adjustment of the adjusting element in steps, so that the torque of the IC engine before and after the changeover is essentially the same. The adjusting element is an electrically operated throttle valve.
