A device for applying labels on a flat parcel set on its edge has a conveyor for conveying individual parcels along a predetermined conveyor path, a label conveyor for conveying individual labels which is controlled by a sensor that determines the position of the parcel front edge, a compression device for pressing the label onto the parcel surface, and a label holder arranged upstream of the compression device, seen in the parcel transport direction, and which receives the labels from the label conveyor. The label holder is designed in such a way that the labels can be positioned in the conveyor path of the parcels perpendicularly to the transport direction and with their adhesive side against the transport direction. As soon as the distance between the front edge of a parcel and the label holder falls below a predetermined value, a label is supplied to the label holder by the label conveyor, which is controlled by the sensor, and so the front edge of the parcel contacts the label and the label is moved on both sides towards the parcel surface and at the same time towards the compression device. The label is loosened from the label holder and pressed by the compression device onto the parcel surface.
