The hanger has a carrier plate (1) fitted with hooks or studs (2). A signal unit (3,4,5,6) is provided, and is equipped so that when the hook or stud is loaded with items of clothing it produces an acoustic or optical signal. The unit can be formed from mechanical, electrical, electronic or light operated electronic components. When the hanger is loaded, a lever operated gearing can uncover a lamp to provide an optical signal. The signal unit can be designed to provide different forms of signal, or signal intensity, according to the loading of the hanger
