The signal processing stage is mounted on a detector holder with the signal lines connected to the multi-element detector passed along the mantle of the holder and supported by an annular carrier, coaxial to the detector holder. The carrier has an annular substrate with a ring substrate on either side of it, respectively supporting a number of pre-amplifier IC components and a corresponding number of switch IC components (134,154-182) controlled via a demultiplexer (136) for supplying the pre-amplifier signals to collector lines (138-144).
