Tensionable straps (64) are used to secure an article carrier (60) to the exterior of a motor vehicle. The straps (64) are passed inside the vehicle (typically inside the boot) and then the door, bootlid, etc., is closed trapping the straps because transverse members (62) at the ends thereof cannot pass through the gap between the edge of the opening (72) and the closure (73). The article carriers of all embodiments comprise a simple vertical plate (61) held against bumper (71) and having a lower rearwardly projecting flange (75) (and, in certain embodiments, an upper forwardly projecting flange). A carrier frame (not shown) may be fixed so as to extend upwardly from the upper flange or may be detachably held by trapping a lower frame member in a channel formed on the lower flange. The upper regions of such a carrier frame are held in position by further tensionable straps.
