Method for increasing utilisation of machined reference surfaces

A procedure for maximising the overall utilisation of the costly high quality surface machining obtainable from a high precision CNC turning centre or comparable machine is particularly appropriate during the manufacture of reference surfaces for the calibration and standardisation of e.g. surface finish/roughness measurement routines. A circular track (2) is machined on a disc (1) of durable material; the disc is then sectored and each sector yields a small insert (6) having a reference surface (7) for setting in a receiving cavity in a holder (not shown), fixed by adhesive, welding, soldering, interference fit, casting resin or by adjustable screw/eccentric clamp for multi-purpose application.
