A machine tool system of a type used to manufacture such as helical gears has a simple process to orientate the workpiece. Sensors are used to measure the relative position of the axis of the workpiece relative to the a fixed or moving machine coordinate system. During machining the controller continuously calculates corrections to be applied to the cutting tool to compensate for errors in workpiece alignment.
