A method for coating food products with a durable even coating of a composition which comprises (A) 1-99 wt.% shellac and (B) 1-99 wt.% polyamide is new. The method comprises coating the salami or cheese surface with an aqueous ethanolic solution containing a mixture of 1-99 wt.% (A) and 1-99 wt.% at least one polyamide (B) soluble in aqueous ethanol. Also claimed are food products prepared by this method. Preferably the solution contains 1-60 wt.% of a mixture of 10-99 wt.% (A) and 1-90 wt.% (B). Ethanol content in the solution is at least 50 wt.%. Dyes and/or pigments may be present in the mixture. The coating on the salami or cheese is dried in a stream of air at 10-50 deg C to form a coating up to 1 mm thick. Coating is carried out by immersion, spraying or painting.
