Pressure plate assembly group for road vehicle friction clutch

A pressure plate 14 and clutch disc 42 are held together by, for example, three holding members 58, eg made of synthetic material or metal strip etc, which are radially located within an inner peripheral edge 66 of the pressure plate 14 and engage by holding section 62 behind edge section 64, thereby allowing housing 12, pressure plate 14 and clutch disc 42 to be transported as a sub-assembly. An axial spacing d is provided which is equal to the maximum movement between the pressure plate 14 and clutch disc 42 in operation. The edge section 64 may have peripheral gaps so that on assembly the holding members 58 are inserted through the gaps and the clutch disc 24 is rotated to align the holding member 58 behind the edge section 64. Alternatively the holding member 58 may be snapped-over or bent-over edge section 64. Holding member 58 may be fixed to the clutch disc 42 by bolt means 60 or welding or it may be an integral tongue/lug like member (see figs 2 and 3). Clutch disc 42 may have a torsion damper (76a, fig 2) and the clutch has an automatic wear adjusting device 22.
