The energy is applied along an object pattern to a projecting pattern forming medium which has a variable volume material, the volume or capacity of which increases when energy is applied thereto and a variable color material, the color of which varies when energy is applied thereto. The volume is varied along the object pattern by applying selected energy to the bulged pattern forming medium, or only the color is varied along the object pattern by applying selected energy thereto. A projecting pattern and a regular pattern which is not substantially projected can be formed arbitrarily on the projecting pattern forming medium by causing either of the two variations selectively.
