The present invention relates to aqueous compositions comprising a peracid of the formula H000C-Ra-Y wherein Ra is a linear or branched alkyl or aryl group of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, and Y is SO3<->, N(Rb)3<+> or HO(CH2CH2O)n, wherein Rb is a linear or branched alkyl or aryl group of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and n is an integer of 1 to 40, or mixtures thereof. The present invention further relates to peracids having the formula H000C-Ra-Y wherein Ra is a linear or branched alkyl or aryl group of 1 to 30 carbon atoms, Y is HO(CH2CH2O)n, and n is an integer of 1 to 40, precursors thereof and to a process for forming such peracids.
