An encoding method and apparatus for conditioning video signal to reduce contouring in images reproduced from compressed (14) video signal involves preconditioning the video signal, prior to completion of compression, to effectively amplify noise in portions of the video signal representing relatively smooth image areas. In an exemplary embodiment, a memory is programmed at respective address locations to remap (13) amplitude values of a digitized (11) signal applied as addresses to the memory.
