Disclosed is an agent for preventing and/or treating ischemic diseases, which comprises a hepatocyte-growth factor (e.g., a proteinic factor having such physicochemical properties that 1) an estimated molecular weight by SDS-PAGE is about 76 to 92 Kdalton; 2) it has an activity of proliferating hepatocytes; 3) the above activity is lost by heat treatment at 80 DEG C for 10 minutes; 4) the above activity is lost by digestion treatment using trypsin or digestion treatment using chymotrypsin; 5) it has strong affinity for heparin, and the like) as an active ingredient. HGF which an active ingredient has an action of suppressing a cell disorder in an ischemic disorder model so that it is effective as an agent for preventing and/or treating ischemic diseases.
