Stranded HTC cable with internal braided conductors

In a multifilament wire of square or rectangular cross-section, with a silver matrix (2) containing high temperature superconductor (HTSC) filaments (3) parallel to the wire length axis, the filaments (3) are arranged in staggered rows. Also claimed is a 'powder-in-tube' process for making a HTSC multifilament wire (1) with a silver matrix (2) by making a square or rectangular cross-section filament (7) with a silver sheath (8) and a HTSC precursor core (9), cutting the filament into lengths, filling a square or rectangular cross-section silver casing (11) with the cut pieces (10) to form a multifilament billet (12) and carrying out thermal and mechanical treatments (13, 14) to convert the precursors into the HTSC phase and to obtain the final wire shape, during billet formation the filament pieces (10) being arranged in staggered rows in the casing (11). Further claimed are: (i) a HTSC multi-wire cable containing one or more of the above multifilament wires (1); and (ii) a superconductor application employing a superconductor coil of the above multifilament wire (1).
