An absorbent dressing comprises an inner layer (1) of untreated paper pulp which is covered by a layer (2) of cellulose wadding and enclosed in an outer wrapping layer (3) with its edges joined by a line of adhesive (5) and its ends (6) heat sealed. The wrapping layer can be of cellulose wadding or non-woven polypropylene, and the dressing can incorporate a layer of polyethylene inside the wrapping layer. The wrapping layer is made from a non-inflammable material which is impermeable to gas and a has an opaque inlet. The inner layers (1, 2) can be impregnated with a cicatrising material, an antiseptic or a spirit solution.
