Roof covering vegetation growth

A roof covering is provided by vegetation growing on a surface without a substrate. The covering consists of a waterproof membrane (1), a holding layer providing an anchorage for the roots, provision for anchorage of the roof materials against the effects of storm, wind or rain, and a water irrigation system. The novelty is that: (a) a root impermeable flexible barrier (2) is placed upon the water impermeable membrane (1); (b) the plants (5) have their roots (4) held within a compostable layer (3), resting on the root impermeable flexible barrier (2); (c) protection against dislodgement from wind, rain or storm is provided by the weight of barrier strips (6); (d) water distribution pipes (7) and/or jets (8) are located on the root impermeable flexible barrier (2), and are linked to a water tank (11) by pumps (9) and pipes (10).
