Recovery of absorbent materials from new nappies or pads

Recovery of absorbent material and fibres from retail packages of products containing these items comprises shredding and sifting the packages in a shredder (11) and classifier (12) to remove the packaging materials and release the absorbent/fibres mixture to a filter (14), where it is disintegrated, and is then passed to a buffer storage section (19) and drawn off from there to a swivelling screen (24) over which the absorbent material and the fibres are partially separated into a fibre mass and a remaining mixture. The fibres are removed and the mixture is passed to a table (26,27) whose oscillating screen (28,29) effects a final separation. The materials are transported throughout by an airstream. Also claimed is the apparatus required for the above process.
