<p>A belt for a continuously variable transmission of the type wherein the belt is passed on drive and driven pulleys to accomplish power transmission. The belt comprises a rigid ring (3). A plurality of rigid first elements are supported on the ring (3) and aligned in a peripheral direction of the ring to be adjacent to each other. Each element has first (2a) and second (2b) surfaces which respectively face forward and rearward of the element in a direction of rotation of the ring, a first locking edge (7) formed at the first surface (2a), and a second locking edge (11) formed at the second surface (2b). The first and second surfaces of the respective adjacent elements are contactable with each other. The first surface (2a) includes a first inclined face (6) formed radially inward of the first locking edge (7) and extending radially inward from the first locking edge so that thickness of the element gradually decreases in a radially inward direction, and a first radially outward face (F) formed radially outward of the first locking edge and extending radially outward from the first locking edge. The second surface (2b) includes a second face (10) formed radially inward of the locking edge (11) and extending radially inward from the second locking edge (11), and a second radially outward face (R) extending radially outward of the second locking edge (11) and extending radially outward from the second locking edge (11). The second face (10) is depressed relative to the second radially outward face (R) so that the thickness of the element is smaller at the second face (10) than that at the second radially outward face (R). The second locking edge (11) is located radially outward of the first locking edge (7) and contactable with the first surface of the adjacent element. According, the adjacent ones of the elements are inclinable relative to each other so that the belt is smoothly passed on pulleys of the continuously variable transmission.</p> |
