Decontamination of soil or building rubble containing chromate(s)

A method for decontaminating solid materials containing chromates, preferably water soluble chromium (VI) compounds comprises the following two step process carried out at 0-80 (10-45) deg C :(1) water soluble chromium (VI) compounds are washed out with water and then the solids are separated; and (2) chromium (VI) compounds in the solution are reduced to water insoluble chromium (III) hydroxide by adding iron (II) ions and optionally a flocking agent to form a solid or precipitate product that is easily separated from the water.
