The component has a semiconducting laser diode (200) with an electrode (9) for receiving a current which drives the diode. A modulator (300) has an electrode (8) and modulates light emitted by the laser diode. The electrode receives a current and drives the modulator. An earth electrode (11) is connected to the laser diode. A resistance (31) has a connection to the laser diode electrode. A second resistance (32) is connected between the modulator electrode and the earth electrode. A third electrode (33) has a connection to the earth electrode and an earthed second connection.
