The portable hand-held device (10) facilitates incineration of needles (6) such as those used in hypodermic syringes (5). Incineration of such needles (6) precludes the spread of diseases and the possibility of contamination of personnel handling such needles (6). The device (10) includes two electrodes (61, 63) that are interconnected to complete the circuit when a needle (6) is inserted into a recess in the device (10). A groove (73) in the guideway (25) for the syringe body (7) allows full insertion of the body (7) to facilitate complete incineration of the needle (6), leaving little or no residue behind. An ambient temperature sensor (79) senses the temperature adjacent the electrodes (61, 63) and cuts off power when the temperature exceeds a pre-set level.
