DEVICE FOR GENERATING ULTRA-SHORT X-RAY PULSES

A device for generating ultra-short X-ray pulses is disclosed. The device includes means (54) for generating a pulsed X-ray beam, means (56) for converting said beam into a substantially parallel beam, first and second multilayer lamellar X-ray arrays (60, 62) in mutually optically conjugated positions, and X-ray focusing means (64, 66) having a common focus and arranged between the arrays. The second array provides the ultra-short pulses. The device is useful for characterising media.
