Hard metal or cermet material, especially for production of tools or for tribological applications, especially for a cutter insert, has a wear resistant coating with (a) a first inner PVD layer adjoining the substrate surface and based on one or more of nitrides, carbonitrides, aluminium carbonitrides and aluminium nitrides of group IVa elements; and (b) a second outer CVD layer adjoining the inner layer and consisting of one or more ceramic hard materials, preferably selected from TiN, TiC, TiCN and Al2O3.
