The novelty is that: (a) a sewing machine has an assembly which transfers a strip of material (48) which is to be sewn as piping, edging or braiding, from a lay-up station (8) to a lay-out bench (25); (b) the bench (25) is located under a fabric grip (29) which is lowered and raised as required; (c) knife blade holder (51) is incorporated within the bench (25), and holds a number of cutter blades (72); (d) a blade drive unit (67) lifts the blades from their recessed position beneath the cutting line (54) in the bench (25), cutting the material as fed through the edging (48) assembly.
