Coupling segments (12, 14) having angled end faces (16a, 16b) are provided with stop members (30, 32) at their respective ends which prevent misalignment of the coupling segments (12, 14) during their assembly onto the adjacent ends of pipes or fittings. The stop members (12, 14) being crushed down during final tightening of the coupling to permit further limited lateral movement of the ends of the coupling segment (12, 14), thus to provide a truly ridged coupling in which angling of the axes of the respective pipes or fittings is eliminated.
