A differential or balanced protection arrangement for an electric line (13) in which each current terminal (5a-5n) of the line is assigned a current sensor whose output signals serve to form a summated or total current signal which is passed to an evaluating device (23). The optical sensors (OS1-Osn,OSG) each have at least one optical output in which, in order to form the summated or total current signal, their optical signals are mutually combined and an optical total current signal is generated and is fed to the evaluation device (23). The optical sensors (OS1-Osn,OSG) are specifically Faraday-sensors.
