Gear selection system for a harvester

A method for selecting the final drive gear ratio in a harvester comprises the steps of selecting the desired ratio by manually depressing a button on a control panel 54 which causes a brake 32 to operate automatically to bring the harvester to a standstill and activates a gear selection mechanism 40 to select the desired gear ratio only after the harvester has come to a complete stop. The harvester has a hydrostatic transmission in series with the final drive, which comprises a four-speed countershaft gearbox (Fig. 1).
