PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-purity tetrabromobisphenol derivative in a short time by eacting a specific bisphenol with an allyl halide under prescribed conditions. SOLUTION: A tetrabromobisphenol of formula I (R is methylene, 2,2- propylidene, 2,2-butylidene, 1,1-cyclohexylene, benzylidene, 3,3,5-trimethyl-1,1- cyclohexylene, m-phenylenebisisopropylidene, etc.) is reacted with an allyl halide in the presence of an alkali by using a mixed medium (e.g. water-toluene) of water and an aromatic hydrocarbon having no compatibility with water as a solvent in the presence of an onium salt or a tertiary amine as a catalyst to give a tetrabromobisphenol derivative of formula II. The amount of an organic solvent used is 50-480mL based on 1mol of the compound of formula I and that of the catalyst is 0.5-50mol%. The reaction is carried out at 10-150 deg.C for 1-7 hours. The compound of formula II is useful as a flame-retardant for a resin. |
