When the projecting direction of a three- dimensional(3D) graphic displayed on the display device is specified to the direction (the same direction as the directional vector of a cylindrical face) of a coordinate axis 63, the CPU projects the 3D graphic as the two-dimensional(2D) graphics of a circle 71 and a point 72 and calculates the shortest distance between two elements, based on the projected 2D graphics. Then the CPU calculates the shortest distance 83 and the shortest coordinates 84, 85 of the projected circle 71 and point 72 from the 2D graphic data. In the case of transforming the calculated shortest 2D coordinates into 3D coordinates, the z coordinate of an unprojected point is set up as the z coordinate of the shortest coordinates. The display device displays a character string 'the shortest distance 90.00', circles 94, 97 positioned on the shortest coordinates of the displayed 3D graphic and setting up the sight line direction to the directional vector, the shortest coordinate values (x1, y1, z1), (x2, y2, z2), and a segment 98 connecting the shortest points.
