PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To embody a reflection type guest-host liquid crystal display device of a stable normally white mode utilizing perpendicular orientation. SOLUTION: This reflection type guest-host liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates 1, 2 which are joined to each other via a prescribed spacing and guest-host liquid crystals 3 which contain dichromatic dye 5 and are held in the spacing. At least, counter electrodes 6 are formed on the substrate 1 on the upper side. At least, a light reflection layer 8, a quarter-wave length plate 9 having a prescribed optical axis and pixel electrodes 10 are laminated on the substrate 2 on the lower side in order from below. Oriented layer 7, 11 for approximately perpendicularly orienting the guest-host liquid crystals 3 along the boundary into contact with the guest-host liquid crystals 3 are formed on one or both of a pair of the substrates 1, 2. These oriented layers 7, 11 are subjected to rubbing treatments along the direction intersecting with the optical axis of the quarter-wave length plate layer 9 at an angle of about 45 deg., thereby imparting a desired pretilt ϕ in the direction intersecting with the perpendicularly oriented quest-host liquid crystals 3. |
