PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new coloring matter compound, capable of manifesting the spectral sensitizing suitability of a silver halide photographic element for a blue color and ultraviolet light without causing any fog or fouling and further spectral sensitizing suitability of silver halide particles of various shapes. SOLUTION: This new zeromethinemerocyanine coloring matter is represented by the formula [R<5> is H, a 1-6C alkyl or a 6-24C aryl; R<1> to R<4> are each R<5> , a 1-6C alkoxy, carbonyl, etc.; R<6> to R<8> are each R<5> , etc., other than H; X is O, S, CH=CH, Se, Te, etc.; Y is O, S or a group represented by the formula N-R<9> (R<9> is R<5> other than H); Z is O, S or Se; Q is a couterion; (n) is 1-6], e.g. 2-[3-(3-trimethylammoniumpropyl)benzothiazolylidene]-3-carboxymethyl- rhodanine bromide. The exemplified compound is obtained by reacting 2-(3- trimethylammoniumpropylthio)-3-(3-trimethylammoniumpropyl)-benzothiazole bromide with 3-carboxymethylrhodanine.
