PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a sulfide group-containing mercaptocarboxylic ester at a high yield without formation of by-products by a reaction of a mercaptocarboxyic ester with an alkylene sulfide. SOLUTION: This sulfide group-containing mercaptocarboxylic ester of formula III (R<1> -R<4> are each H or a 1-12C hydrocarbon; R<5> is a 10-20C hydrocarbon; R<6> is 1-3C alkylene; (n) is 1-3) is highly actively and selectively obtained by a ring-opening addition reaction of alkylene sulfide of formula I with a mercaptocarboxylic ester of formula II in the presence of a basic catalyst at 0-200 deg.C under pressure of 1-100kg/cm<2> , preferably in an inert gas atmosphere and, if necessary, in a solvent (e.g. methanol). In this reaction a compound of formula I is gradually added to the reaction system which contains a compound of formula II at a ratio of 1-10mol based on 1mol of the compound of formula I. The compound of formula III is useful as a chelating agent, an additive for lubricant, rubber and refined petroleum oils, a polymerization chain transfer agent, etc. |
