PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a poly-α-olefin having relatively broad molecular weight distribution and high stereoregularity. SOLUTION: A poly-α-olefin is produced by polymerizing anα-olefin by using (A) a transition metal catalyst component consisting of a magnesium halide, a phthalic acid diester and a tetravalent titanium compound containing at least one halogen atom, (B) an organic aluminum compound and (C) 5-90mol (based on 1mol of titanium in the transition metal catalyst component) of a trialkoxy-n-alkylsilane, adding 0.5-50mol (based on 1mol of titanium in the transition metal catalyst component) of an alkoxycycloalkylsilane to the system and continuing the polymerization.
