PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cut a veneer of a stable thickness with a less variability of a high quality, further to improve an yield by cutting a proper veneer while avoiding deflection of an original wood, until a minimum cutting diameter of a raw wood, when a back-up roll is actuated against raw wood avoiding deflection of the original wood under cutting. SOLUTION: When a back-up roll 21 is fed in a raw wood centripetal direction at a predetermined step feed quantity F, the feed is effected by a temporary feed quantity f which is added with a compensation quantityαset beforehand optionally from a preceeding control initial cutting original wood diameter which the back-up roll 21 abuts the original wood 1 to the predetermined step feed quantity F, thereafter, at least when the deflection of the original wood 1 is corrected, the step feed is effected by changing the temporary step feed quantity f to the predetermined step feed quantity F.
