The present invention ralates to an apparatus for controlling the operation of a display data channel (DDC) part of a monitor and a method thereof to provide a compatibility of a personal computer (PC) having a DDC function with a PC having no DDC function. In the conventional PC without a DDC function, data are consecutively transmitted through a data terminal (SDA) port by means of the vertically synchronizing signal, when the monitor power is supplied. Therefore, the ID information of the monitor was determined through the SDA port when the PC is booting. Such conventional PC without a DDC function fails to determine the ID information of the monitor. It raised a problem of incompatibility with a PC having a DDC function. The present invention resolves the above problem controlling a power supply (Vcc) of a DDC part (1) of a power switching part (2) with a microcomputer (3), memorizing the on/off -state of the DDC function with a memory (4) and inputting the on/off-state of the DDC function by the user utilizing an or-screen display (OSD) screen and a key input at an OSD processing part (6), video display part (7) and a color picture tube (CPT) (8). The present invention also provides an apparatus for controlling the DDC function in which the user can selectively change the operational state of the DDC function, store the changed information in the storing means for a steady utilization, and control the change by means of the OSD menu and the key input, thereby providing compatibility of a PC having a DDC function with a PC having no DDC function.
