A cathode structure of an electron gun for a cathode ray tube is provided The cathode structure comprises a substrate; cathode electrode layers having an electron emission portions which are spaced apart from each other at predetermined intervals on said substrate and each has a plurality of metal tips formed thereon; an insulating layer formed on said substrate and having openings through which said metal tips are exposed; and a gate electrode layer formed on top of said insulating layer and having gates through which said metal tips are exposed formed at the portion corresponding to said openings and slits laterally extending from said electron emission portion. The capacitance of the gate electrode can be reduced, thereby preventing distortions of the driving signal for emitting electrons and the electron beam.
