<p>A spindle and clinching apparatus using said spindle are disclosed, said spindle comprises two shafts 44, 46 each rotatable about their own axis and a coupling 45, such that rotation of the first shaft about its own axis causes rotation of the second shaft about its own axis, and an elongate resiliently flexible member 47 tending to urge the axes of the two shafts into a collinear arrangement. The clinching apparatus comprises two rotatable spindles 10, 11, at least one being of the kind described, and means 41 and 42 to cause rotation of the spindles, the flexible member allowing the spacing of the spindles to increase in the plane of the spindles. The clinching apparatus may be used for fitting a sealing strip with a U-shaped cross section to a flange of varying width on a motor vehicle during manufacture, the two spindles serving to rotate rolls 14 and 15. The flexible member 47 may be a chrome vanadium rod.</p> |
