Method of producing wear resistant surfaces in the ring grooves of aluminium-silicon alloy pistons by arc weld deposition, whereby copper or copper alloy powder, silicon powder or a mixture of both is introduced into the weld pool (20) or directly into the arc (18). A piston for internal combustion engines produced by the above method is also claimed.
