摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display element having a high contrast satisfying specific conditions at the time of setting the direction of the twist from a lower substrate toward an upper substrate to be positive. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 30 is held between the lower substrate 11 and the upper substrate 12. The liquid crystal molecules make uniform orientation free from the twists or twist orientation wLC twisted 360 deg. between the orientation directions RL and RU of the liquid crystals on the lower substrate 11 side and the upper substrate 12 side with respect to the RL and RU and the transmission axes PL and PU of lower upper polarizing plates 41 and 42. The twist direction of the liquid crystals from the lower substrate 11 toward the upper substrate 12 is defined positive and the conditions of the equation: 35 deg.<=ϕp <=65 deg., -65 deg.<=ϕa <=-35 deg., 95 deg.<=ϕp -ϕa <=110 deg., 0.18μm<=Δnd<=0.37μm. In the equation,ϕp ,ϕa are respectively the angles formed by the directions of the orientation treatments of the lower substrate 11 and the upper substrate 12;Δn is refractive index anisotropy; d is a liquid crystal layer thickness. The axial directions of the polarizing plates 41, 42 are optimized in such a manner, by which the light diffusion in a black state is improved and a high contrast is obtd.
