The machine has a series of main grinding wheels (T) fixed to a shaft (2), and a blank carrier assembly designed to place the blanks (8) in contact with the grinding wheels. It has an additional grinding wheel (9), mounted freely on the end of a support (10, 19), and an actuator for the support which enables the additional wheel to be moved between a retracted position and an active position. In the active position the additional wheel's axis of rotation lies parallel to that of the shaft and the wheel is in contact with a driving disc (17) on the shaft between the main grinding wheels. It also has a mechanism for placing the blanks in contact with the additional wheel when it is in its active position. The additional grinding wheel is of smaller diameter than the main grinding wheels, and it is driven by a friction surface (20) of a plastics or elastomer material.
