A metal coating is deposited electrolytically on the cylindrical surface of a roller (5) used for continuous casting by moving the roller relative to a bath of electrolyte (2) while passing current between the roller and submerged anodes (4). Masks (7,7') of insulating material are submerged in the bath adjacent the corners of the roller, between its ends and cylindrical surface, to prevent the concentration of current which would otherwise cause excess deposition at the ends of the cylindrical surface. Also claimed is an electrolyte bath with means for relatively moving the roller therein and containing the anodes and masks for applying the coating.
