The ratchet lock is used with two component parts, one having a multi sided male end which fits into a similarly shaped female end. A bore (24) is provided in the insertion end of one component in which a spring loaded retention body (16) is fixed. When the two parts are joined the retention body engages in a location in the other tool part to maintain the locked position.The retaining body has a hollow cap-like structure with a cylindrical cover (18). The spring (26) is mounted within the hollow chamber formed within the cap. A section of the spring lies against the inner wall of the cover part which prevents the cover part falling out due to radial tension. The spring is retained in the bore by its force acting on the walls of the bore
