PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform recording and erasion to a polarization address type recersible liquid crystal recorded by the use of a general non-polarization optical write-in system by making a polarizing element also function as an optical polarizing means used for optical write-on or erasion. SOLUTION: The longitudinal direction of a recording medium 11 (aligned with the direction of the transmission axis of an upper polarizing plate) is defined as a direction 12, a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction 12 and parallel with the direction of the transmission axis of the lower polarizing plate is defined as a direction 13 and a direction deviated from the directions 12 and 13 by 45 deg. respectively is defined as a direction 14. In a state where an upper polarizing plate 5 is removed, all the surface of the medium 11 is previously irradiated with polarized light whose polarization direction is the direction 14. An irradiation wavelength region is set within a range where the orientation of the molecular axis of a diachroic compound is changed. Since the orientation direction of liquid crystal becomes 45 deg., light is transmitted ion accordance with the degree of the retardation of a liquid crystal layer 8. By the irradiation of light in the wavelength region that the molecular axis of the dichroic compound is changed by using a pen light in such a state, liquid crystal molecules at the irradiated part are oriented in the direction 13, so that a write-in part becomes dark. |
