PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract the directional pattern of an outline as a definite directional pattern even when the outline of a character to be identified is a curve, etc., by individually detecting a directional component belonging to each black pixel constituting an outline image and extracting the directional pattern of the outline image according to the detected directional component. SOLUTION: Concerning a handwritten character stored in a memory 4 and displayed on an LCD 3, a CPU 1 executes a prescribed processing and compares the processing result and each character kind stored in the dictionary memory 5 to recognize which character kind the handwritten character corresponds to. Namely, in this case the CPU 1 executes the preprocessing of removing noise, etc., from the inputted character (handwritten character) to make a smooth character. After then, the CPU 1 obtains an outline image from an original picture ad divides the outline image into respective pixels of 64×64. Then the CPU 1 detects directional components respectively belonging to each pixel concerning all the pixels (black pixels) constituting the outline and extracts the directional pattern of the outline based on the directional components of each detected black pixel. |
