The control includes a pedal (18), forming the accelerator operating lever, and a control cable (20). The pedal is hinged about an axis (X) which is fastened to the body of the vehicle. There is an elastic mechanism (24,28) for returning the pedal and the cable to their rest positions. There is also a system (30) for separating the movement of the pedal and the cable when the pedal is being released. This is achieved by means of an auxiliary lever (32) to which the cable is actually attached. The second end of the accelerator pedal lever co-operates with the auxiliary lever when the pedal is depressed, but separates from it when the pedal is released suddenly.
