Method of identifying sample molecules

The method generates primary ions at a primary ion source. These ions are fed to a charge exchange region in an ion guiding device. The sample molecules are ionised in the charge exchange region by charge exchange with the primary ions into sample molecule ions. The sample molecule ions are supplied to a mass spectrometer where they are detected. A sample molecule molecular beam containing the sample molecules is generated. The sample molecular beam is directed such that it passes unhindered through the openings in the ion guiding device into the charge exchange region. The molecular beam is preferably aligned such that it passes into the charge exchange region parallel to a guide direction of the ion guiding device.
