The appliance cuts hair or grass to a controlled height by means of a pair of cutters which are driven in opposite directions on the same axis by an electric motor, the perimeter of the discs being serrated and rotated close to each other or a comb plate. The comb (2) is positioned beneath a cutter blade (3), below which is another similar blade. An electric motor drives the cutters in opposite directions and teeth (8) on the circumference (9) of the cutters may arranged oppositely. The comb may be positioned between or beneath the blades forming two interfaces to provide the shearing action. The comb position may be adjusted in the direction (5) by a knob and scale (23).
