Cooling system for wheel-brake component of motor vehicle

The fan (51) is mounted coaxially to the road wheel, by which it is driven in the same direction but at higher speed by a gear- or roller-train. The latter is coupled to the wheel by a clutch (91) engaged when the temperature of the hub (10) or the component (6,7) exceeds a value which is adjustable. The fan can be driven at least twice the speed of the wheel, and the clutch-actuating component can be a body of shape-memorising alloy, being typically annular and of round cross-section, for action in the radial direction. For action in the axial direction it can be in the shape of a flat plain washer when cold, while assume that of a plate spring when hot.
