A ram weight (52) for controlling movement of materials in a closed internal mixer hopper is moveable between a chute (36) leading to the mixer inlet (32) and a ram weight compartment (54) above the chute (36). The ram weight compartment (54) has spaced apart guide members (70, 72) providing an opening through which material and gasses may flow out of the compartment (54) during upward movement of the ram weight (52) which reduces the force required to lift the ram weight and minimizes leakage from the hopper (38) at the upper wall (56).
