Variable effect elastic damper

The damper is made of homogenous elastic material which dampens mechanical vibrations, eg. as an acoustic impedance. At least one end of the damper is fitted with a heater (4,5) or a heat sink, to vary the thermal gradient in the material and thereby alter the damping characteristics. The damping material can be an elastomer and can be made conducting to generate the heating effect inside the material. Alternately the heating is via heating ducts through the material. The heating causes a drop in elastic modulus in the direction of wave propagation.
